Eat Bulaga should just give Kalyeserye a rest
Today I've watched the April 9 episode of Eat Bulaga and all I could think of was the plot of Kalyeserye has nowhere to go anymore. Frustrating as it may be for the televiewers, the people behind this once stellar segment keep stretching the story and juicing it out despite not getting anything of substance. I wish they would just stop capitalizing too much on Aldub's kilig powers, because it's just plain lazy.
I've been vocal about my disappointment with the writers of Kalyeserye lately and I will continue doing so until they actually fix this. I mean, the viewers deserve more than what we are getting right now. Aldub deserves more than this. Yes, the segment is still entertaining to some extent, but the quality has been declining ever since. What ever happened to the innovative scripts? The crazy cliffhangers? The oh-my-gosh inducing scenes? I know that the people behind the Kalyeserye are capable of giving us ingenious primetime show at daytime, as they have proven before, but suddenly everybody became too complacent. Is it just Ningas-kugon, or did everybody just refuse to put effort anymore?
I'm all up for the addition of extra characters if they were able to bring out flavor in the story, like DuhhRiz. Sadly, the people they have included right now are only in just for some cheap slapstick comedy. It sure does make me laugh once in a while, like Yaya Pak's antics sometimes, but this is not the reason why I'm watching Kalyeserye. I'd rather they do backstories about Lola Tinidora's wild younger days, than see the plot of this story rapidly going down the drain. I'd rather they just end this right now with whatever dignity is left.
“Defeat exists but not suffering. A true warrior knows that when he loses a battle, he is improving the skill with which he wields a sword. He will be able to fight more skilfullly next time.” - Paulo Coelho
Kalyeserye has become The Buzz minus Boy Abunda who asks questions about the real score about Aldub, at least every time they celebrate their Monthsary. Of course, it's a treat for their fans around the world as they reminisce all the things that have happened for the past 8 months. I still get kilig knowing some tidbits, like Alden officially owning up to the unsaid fact that he was the one who sent Maine a box of Haw-Haw candies before they even met personally. However, are these all there is for Kalyeserye?
Or maybe the glorification of Monthsaries and Weeksaries doesn't work for me because I do not celebrate them at all. Sadly, for me it reflects how Filipinos take relationships with a grain of salt, so lightly being together for a month is already considered a huge feat. For a country that values long courtships, it's ironic how relationships are not expected to last long enough, not even a year.
Or maybe I just crave for some quality story out of Kalyeserye. On normal weekday episodes, there is nothing to discuss anymore as the plot can easily be summarized in a sentence or two. If their cliffhanger was a person, it would commit harakiri for bringing shame to its entire clan. Everything is just plain pointless, other than to show the advertisements and provide a venue for Alden and Maine to greet each other. Surely, they already do that almost everyday during the Sugod Bahay segment.
To be honest, I like Sugod Bahay segment more than Kalyeserye. It's funnier and livelier than Kalyeserye. I like the interactions of hosts, both in the satellite location and studio, and the daily winner. I like seeing how much Maine has improved in hosting and giving impromptu punchlines. Her childlike laugh is also contagious. I love seeing them horn their skills in other segments than seeing them slowly stagnating in Kalyeserye. Come on Eat Bulaga, wake up!
